While not, strictly speaking, being part of a lubricants offer many companies do offer such products due to the similar chemistries. Even so, anyone involved in the lubricants industry could benefit from knowing some heat teat basics. Some basic heat treating terminology as well as some basic concepts will be reviewed. Various types of product chemistries used for heat treating and quenching and their properties will also be covered.

Chicago Section of STLE Presents:

"Metalworking Fluids - The Need for Performance and Lifetime Standards"

Rick Butler

DuBois Chemicals

Thursday, January 17th, 2019

Abstract:

Clear, concise and well written metalworking fluid lifetime standards are needed. Current efforts by the UK Lubricants Association and ILMA are complicated, cumbersome and incomplete. Machine shops struggle with identifying hopelessly spent coolants. Budgeting time and money for proper replacement of both straight oils and water based MWF are not generally practiced. Confusion, corrosion and unnecessary exposure to heavy metals are the result. Case studies are discussed. Compact and clear MWF lifetime standards are proposed.

Biography:

Rick Butler graduated from Michigan State University with a B.S. in Chemistry. He has spent most of his career developing metal working fluids. He is the R&D Manager of Metalworking Fluids for DuBois Chemicals in Bedford Park, IL. Rick joined DuBois after holding the R&D Manager role at Chemtool, Inc. for 14 years, analytical chemist at Fuchs for 13 years and Group Leader of Coolant Development at DA Stuart for 4 years.

Rick has played an active role in STLE for most of his professional career including the Metalworking National Section Chair and Condition Monitoring National Chair. He is Immediate Past Chair of the Chicago Section, Vice Chairman of the National Education Metalworking Committee. He holds an STLE certification as a metal working specialist. He is also a member of ASTM E 34.50 committee which addresses all metalworking related standards. Rick is also active in the Society of Applied Spectroscopy where he was Chicago Section Chairman from 2002 to 2003.
