Chicago Section of STLE Presents:

"Global Trends in Tribology and Lubrication Technologies for More Efficient and Reliable Transportation Vehicles"

Dr. Ali Erdemir

Argonne National Laboratory and STLE President 2016-17

Thursday, March 16th, 2017

Abstract:

To meet the needs of our modern lifestyle, worldwide energy consumption has increased steadily over the years especially in the transportation sector which has already reached more than one billion motorized vehicles. It is hard to believe, but about a third of the fuel’s energy in these vehicles is still consumed by friction. In this talk, I will present some of the emerging trends in tribology and lubrication technologies that can help improve efficiency and durability for a sustainable transportation future that is also environmentally sensible.

Biography:

Dr. Ali Erdemir is an Argonne Distinguished Fellow and Senior Scientist with international recognition and significant accomplishments in the fields of materials science, surface engineering and tribology.
His current research is directed toward nanoscale design and large-scale manufacturing of new materials, coatings and green lubricants for a broad range of applications in transportation, manufacturing, and other energy conversion and utilization systems where efficiency and reliability are the primary objectives. Erdemir has received numerous coveted awards, including 6 R&D 100 Awards; holds 19 U.S. patents; and has published more than 300 papers, and edited 3 books.
