"Carbide Derived Carbon Coatings on Hard Ceramics for Tribological Applications”

Thursday, November 9th, 2017

Abstract:

Hard ceramic carbides such as SiC and WC are often used in wear sensitive applications because of their high hardness and wear resistance. Carbide derived carbon (CDC) is a nanostructured carbon material produced when the metal species in a carbide ceramic are removed by etching in a halogen atmosphere leaving only the carbon behind. Thin layers of CDC can be grown on hard ceramics, which are very resistant to spallation or delamination and reduce the sliding friction coefficient of the material in service. The synthesis and performance of CDC tribological layers on hard ceramics are reviewed and discussed for industrial and biomedical applications.

Biography:

Professor Michael McNallan has been on the faculty of the University of Illinois at Chicago since the fall of 1978. He is a fellow of ASM International and holds M.S. and PhD degrees in Metallurgy from MIT. He served a 9 years term as Associate Dean for Undergraduate Affairs in the College of Engineering at UIC from 2006 to 2015. MS and PHD graduates from his laboratory hold academic and industrial positions in the materials field in the U.S., Europe, and Asia. His research interests include high temperature chemical processing and corrosion as well as tribology of metals and ceramics.
